Settlement of Balàfia
Classed as a Historical Site of the Balearic Islands, this settlement is a small collection of buildings which are highly representative of popular Ibizan architecture. It is located next to the village of San Lorenzo, in the centre of the island.
Its origins potentially date back to the Muslim period and it is comprised of seven houses of a circular layout made from stone and mortar, some with their own tower. Its main function was defensive, to protect its inhabitants from pirate raids which were common during the 16th century. It contains ovens, yards, wells, cisterns and all the infrastructure necessary for self-sufficiency.
