Among the island&#8217;s best-known legends are those of the Gegant d&#8217;es Vedr\u00e0 and the fameliars, two very different tales that perfectly reflect the richness of Ibiza&#8217;s folklore.[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text css=&#8221;&#8221;]<strong>The Gegant d&#8217;es Vedr\u00e0, Guardian of the Islet<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Off Ibiza&#8217;s south-west coast rises Es Vedr\u00e0, a dramatic rocky islet that has inspired stories and legends for centuries. Long before modern myths about its magnetic powers emerged, local tradition had already made it the setting for one of the island&#8217;s most famous <em>rondalles<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>According to the legend, a giant lived beneath the waters surrounding Es Vedr\u00e0, preventing anyone from approaching the islet. One day, two brothers set out to collect <em>fonoll mar\u00ed<\/em> (sea fennel), a coastal plant needed to cure their father&#8217;s illness. The giant captured one of them, but the other devised a clever plan. Knowing that the giant loved octopus, he prepared a trap by filling one with sea urchins. These tiny, restless creatures, often described as rather unattractive, were believed to possess an extraordinary ability to complete huge amounts of work in an incredibly short time. They are among the best-known characters in the folklore of Ibiza and Formentera.<\/p>\n<p>Legend says that a <em>fameliar<\/em> could only be obtained on one particular night of the year beneath the old bridge in Santa Eul\u00e0ria. There, a mysterious plant had to be quickly trapped inside a black bottle, where it would transform into one of these magical beings. Once released, the little creature would always repeat the same request: &#8220;feina o menjar&#8221; (&#8220;work or food&#8221;).
