Long before Ibiza became known for its crystal-clear beaches, there was a resource that shaped the island’s destiny: salt.<\/h3>\n

For centuries, it was one of the Mediterranean’s most valuable commodities, turning the Salinas into Ibiza’s main economic driving force and earning them the nickname the island’s white gold.<\/p>\n

The Phoenicians were the first to make use of this precious resource, followed by the Carthaginians, Romans and Arabs, who continued to exploit the salt flats and export their production to numerous ports across the Mediterranean. Its lagoons, which change colour throughout the year, are home to extraordinary biodiversity and provide a sanctuary for numerous migratory birds, including flamingos.
