Adlib Ibiza: When tradition became a way of dressing

Adlib Ibiza: When tradition became a way of dressing

There are few styles capable of evoking Ibiza at first glance. A flowing white linen dress, delicate handcrafted embroidery or intricate lacework instantly bring the island to mind.

Yet Adlib fashion is much more than a way of dressing: it is the meeting point between Ibiza’s centuries-old traditions and the spirit of freedom that arrived on the island in the late 1960s.

Long before Adlib fashion was born, Ibizan farming families made their own garments using linen, cotton and other natural fabrics. Traditional clothing was not driven by trends but by the practical needs of everyday life, with every piece deeply rooted in the island’s artisanal heritage.

Everything changed when artists, designers and travellers from around the world began settling in Ibiza, drawn by its natural beauty and laid-back lifestyle. Inspired by the island’s fabrics, embroidery and the simplicity of its traditional clothing, they started reinterpreting these elements through a more contemporary and creative lens.

In 1971, Serbian princess Smilja Mihailovitch, who was living in Ibiza, launched the first Adlib Fashion Show together with the Island Council (Consell Insular) to showcase this emerging movement. The name, derived from the Latin expression ad libitum (“with freedom” or “at one’s pleasure”), perfectly captured its philosophy, summed up in a motto that remains just as relevant today: “Dress as you like, but with style.”

More than fifty years later, Adlib fashion continues to evolve without losing sight of its roots. Its creations are still showcased both on and beyond the island as a symbol of Ibiza, proving that tradition can be reimagined and transformed into a unique expression of a destination’s identity.
