Five of the best places to enjoy the Ibizan sunset
Ibiza is a multifaceted island offering an endless variety of experiences, each as appealing as the next.
Ibiza is famous for its nightlife, Adlib fashion, crystal-clear waters, charming coves, centuries-old history, gastronomy, artistic creativity and hippy heritage… Among this long list of treasures, there is one that can be experienced with particular intensity during the summer months: the sunset. Ibiza’s extensive west-facing coastline makes the island a privileged setting for witnessing this magical moment from the most unexpected places.
Here, however, we will focus on five spots that could be considered must-sees for first-time visitors to the island.
Ses Variades. A classic. The place to watch the sun go down and where the ultimate chill-out spirit was born in the 1980s. Located right next to the centre of San Antonio, the area is easily accessible on foot along its pleasant coastal promenade. Starting at the harbour breakwater and following the rocky coastline, you will reach an area filled with terraces and bars in just a few minutes, where the latest music provides the perfect soundtrack to the sunset. The legendary Café del Mar is among the venues offering a prime spot for the perfect sunset.

Benirrás, to the beat of drums with a hippy soul. Benirrás is a cove in the north of Ibiza, in the municipality of Sant Joan. Its orientation makes it particularly well suited for watching the sunset, while the beauty of the surroundings is dramatically enhanced by a small but strikingly steep islet rising from the centre of the horizon. Like a natural stone sundial, regular visitors can follow the progression of summer by observing which side of the rock the sun sets on. The famous drumming sessions held on the beach on Sunday evenings are particularly popular, although visitors should bear in mind that vehicle access is restricted for the comfort and safety of the large crowds that gather here.

Cala Conta, sunsets on a grand scale. Nestled between small cliffs of white sandstone are two stretches of beach located in the municipality of San José. Their beauty is truly remarkable. With its wide-open spaces, the beach offers views of the enormous silhouette of the island of Des Bosc, which conceals the larger island of Conejera behind it. From the beach itself, or just a few metres above it on the vast rocky platforms that characterise the surroundings, visitors can enjoy one of the most beautiful sunsets on the island, with a group of distant islets in the background. On particularly clear days, it is even possible to make out the mainland coast around Dénia.
Punta Galera, the most contemplative sunset. This secluded spot is one of the most unusual coves on Ibiza’s coastline. The workings of an old quarry have shaped a shoreline of flat stone terraces at different heights, stretching along both sides of a wide, V-shaped cove. Access is somewhat challenging, as it involves walking carefully and sensibly along rocky paths at a certain height above sea level. But once you arrive, the experience is truly unique. Deep-blue waters with a richly diverse seabed, and the opportunity to watch the sunset in silence, either alone or in good company.

Cala d’Hort Viewpoint, a picture-perfect classic. We return to the municipality of San José to explore the area where the iconic islet of Es Vedrà and its smaller sibling, Es Vedranell, rise from the sea. This immense rock formation, photographed countless times, provides a magnificent backdrop for some of the most mystical and dreamlike sunsets in magical Ibiza. Before reaching the cove of the same name, several paths lead to the cliffs, offering a privileged vantage point. From the top of these rocky heights, visitors can enjoy a spectacular panoramic view of the sunset. It is advisable to arrive early to secure a good spot.
